Beams
A beam is a structural element that can withstand weight, primarily by resisting the forces of bending. This key construction component can carry vertical gravitational force and can also bear horizontal loads.
Traditional usage includes foundation for buildings, bridges, civil / nautical /
aeronautics projects.
Smaller structures such as automobile and machine frames as well as mechanical and structural
systems also
comprise of beams. They are distinguished by their profile, i.e. the shape of their cross-section,
length
and basic constituting material.
The most common beam is the I-beam or wide-flange beam,
which is also identified as universal beam or
universal column by many. Other popular profiles are the C-channel, the pipe and the angle. Beams
are often
described by their support systems, such as simple beam, cantilevers, overhanging beam etc.
FISTCO
