In this essay you are going to read about how much steel is being used in specific years and how much is each country’s contribution to steel.
Note: keep reading to see all the charts and information for crude and apparent steel usage.World steel production historical statistics
steel production data has been gathered by world steel records from 1950 to 2017. In 1950, 189 Million Tonnes of steel was produced to market place, the number has raised to 347 million tonnes by the end of 1960. Between 2005 to 2010 the number has raised more than usual 100 to 200 every ten year and reached its peak, from 1148 to 1433! And finally in 2017, 1689 million tons of steel was produced.
Top steel producers by country in 2017
- China by producing 831.7 million tonnes of steel in 2017 is worlds number one steel producer. That covers half of the number of steel producing in 2017!
- After China, Japan is world’s second big producer by producing 104.7 million tons of steel in 2017.
- India, by producing 101.4 million tonnes of steel is at the third place.
- USA, 81.6 million tonnes.
- Russia 71.3 million tonnes of steel.
And at the bottom Austria by producing only 8.1 million tonnes of steel is the last producer among the twenty section list.
steel production and use: geographical Distribution in 2007 and 2017. (crude vs finished steel)
What is crude steel?
crude steel is the first or raw steel produced in liquid form, the crude steel is produced in LD process which is the main process of steel production.
Crude steel world total: 1,350 million tonnes in 2007
China crude steel production portion is 36.3% as worlds biggest producer also EU with 15.6% stands in the second place. Other Asia covers 11.0% and NAFTA (north America free trade agreement) 9.7%.
Apparent steel use world total: 1,224 million tonnes in 2007
china portion is 34.2% and EU 16.6% as well as this rest of Asia and NAFTA respectively with 14.5% and 11.5% are the biggest consumers of steel.
Crude steel world total: 1,689 million tonnes in 2017
China has raised its crude steel production from 34.2% in 2007 to 49.2% in 2017 and that’s almost half of the worlds
crude production!
Japan has decreased its production to 6.2% from 8.9%.
That big change can be because china
is producing more and covering all the steel required in the world and becoming largest producer of crude steel in
the world.
As well as this other countries in Asia have raised their steel production from 11.0% to 13.4%.
Apparent steel use world total: 1,587 million tonnes in 2017
China is also top producer for apparent steel production the number has changed from 34.2% in 2007 to 46.4% in
2017.
Other countries for example japan decreased its producing number from 6.6% to 4.1% also NAFTA from 11.5% to
8.9%.
Apparent steel use per capita 2017 (kilograms)
According to 2017 reports south Korea is the largest steel consumer with the number of 1106.3 kilograms per
person!
South Korea steel production: Since south Korea is not a big apparent or crude steel producer, it means that Korea
is one of the biggest buyers!
China is the largest producer for either apparent and crude steel but China is not one of the big consumers which it
shows how much China benefits from producing and selling steel to other countries!
Note: You can see more details in each picture.
As it’s clear so many countries only produce steel for selling which it means, steel has been a big benefit for so many countries over years, as you read china is the biggest one!
There is a question after all, are we using all the crude steel?
Is that the reason why there is too much waste in steel making process?
If we had less steel was it still available for us use it in the way that we are using it today?
